2014 Martock Select Late Harvest
Crafted from Vidal Blanc harvested under frigid conditions at Warner Vineyards, this wine pairs well with spicy or savoury food. Recent winner of the 2018 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Nova Scotia Wines.
Grape: 100% Vidal Blanc
The 2014 growing season got off to a rocky start. A colder than average winter damaged some buds reducing the crop. A late spring frost killed off many shoots further reducing the crop. Post-tropical storm Arthur blew through during bloom destroying shoots and flowers reducing the crop yet again and causing a lot of extra work in the vineyard. Summer was fairly average but autumn was near perfect with warm dry weather allowing the surviving fruit to be harvested well in advance of frost at a level of ripeness not seen since 2010.
This wine was made from grapes harvested one week before icewine grapes were picked. After pressing (at -6 degrees C) the concentrated select late harvest juice is released at almost 30% sugar, with enough acid and flavour to keep the wine balanced. The result is a wine with all the flavour and aroma of icewine but with a far more approachable profile.
Look for notes of peach, apricot, and tropical fruit with a hint of marzipan on the nose. The palate reveals ripe tropical fruit with quince, peach, and a balancing finish with a touch of minerality. This wine exhibits the perfect balance between intense sweetness and refreshing acidity.
